The Federal Aviation Administration’s announcement that UAS/Drone registration is now a requirement that any owner who has or will be operating an unmanned aircraft must register. Here is what you need to know:
UAS owners are being required to register their Drones purchased prior to December 21, 2015 by February 19, 2016. Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) purchased after December 21, 2015 must register before their first flight. Drone registrants will be expected to provide their name, home address and e-mail. Upon completion of the process, the web application will issue a Certificate of Aircraft Registration/Proof of Ownership. A unique identification number for the UAS owner will also be issued and must be marked on the aircraft.
Drone Owners may register through the web at www.faa.gov/uas/registration
From December 21, 2015 to January 20, 2016 the FAA has announced that they will be waiving the $5 registration fee.
Owners using the model aircraft for hobby or recreation will only have to register once and may use the same identification number for all of their Drones. This registration will be valid for 3 years.
The FAA is expecting hundreds of thousands of UAS’s to be purchased this holiday season and hopes this requirement will help the new airspace users learn the rules and understand that they are accountable to the public for flying responsibly.
Currently the online system is only for the use of non-commercial/business UAS registrants. The FAA hopes to have the system able to handle those registrations by the Spring of 2016.
