Boat Insurance and Boat Safety Classes Go Hand in Hand!
Boat Insurance and Power Squadrons are two of the most important things that recreational boat owners should be talking about and getting involved with.
Some of my fondest memories have been on the water. Whether I was crabbing with my great uncle as a youngster or exploring the bays in Maryland on my family’s boat in my early 20’s, I could never and still can’t get enough of the sea. My oldest of 4 children was and still is in love with horses. She would get so excited to see the wild ponies on the beach as we cruised by Assateague Island. Even reading about living on the water brings back great memories. As I write this I am reminiscing about the books that I was “forced” to read in high school. The Old Man and the Sea, The Last Waterman (Glenn Lawson) and so many more. I know first hand the value that your local Power Squadron can bring to the boating community. I myself took a course when my parents bought their first boat. I thoroughly enjoyed going to class with my father and competing with him for which one of us would get the highest score on the final exam. I think he either earned a 98 or 100. He beat me by the way, by one point!
My love of the water is one of the reasons I decided to specialize in Boat Insurance when I opened my insurance agency, Seaman’s Insurance Group. Jacksonville Sail & Power Squadron (JSPS), an element of the United States Power Squadrons®, is part of the world’s largest recreational boating organization. For more than 60 years, we have worked to make the waters around Jacksonville a safer place through boating education, civic service and fellowship.
Through JSPS, you can improve your boating skills and knowledge with certified instructors. Since we offer a wide range of courses, you have lots of choices. You can take advantage of any course. Need help? We can help you decide where to start.
If you are a beginning boater, you might want to start with America’s Boating Course (ABC) or Seamanship. ABC will also fulfill Florida’s requirement for an approved boating course so you can legally operate a boat. Seamanship goes further, and gives you a fuller understanding of boating knowledge and techniques.
If you are interested in getting around on longer trips, then you’ll want to take our in-depth piloting and navigation courses. You should take them in order: Piloting and then Advanced Piloting for making your way in charted waters like large lakes, bays, and near shore gulf and ocean boating. Also you may be interested in electronic navigation tools with our Electronic Navigation course. If you want even more, then learn celestial navigation with our Junior Navigation and Navigation courses, aimed at offshore long-distance boating.
